Shri. Swami Ramdev

Swami Ramdev, popularly known as Baba Ramdev was born in 1965 in Alipur in the Mahendragarh district in the Indian state of Haryana. Ramdev is an Indian, Hindu swami and is particularly well known for his efforts to popularize yoga. His yoga camps see a large attendance of his followers. The Baba is also one of the founders of the "Divya Yoga Mandir Trust" that aims at promoting yoga among the masses. Born as Ramkishen Yadav he attended school till grade eight in Shahjadpur in Harayana and then joined a gurukul in Khanpur village to study yoga and Sanskrit. Ultimately he renounced worldly life and became a Sanyasi (took to monastic living) taking on his present name. He later travelled to the Jind district and joined the Kalva gurukul and offered free yoga training to villagers across Harayana. Baba Ramdev spent many years of his life studying ancient Indian scriptures and practicing meditation and self discipline all along. He has also founded the Patanjali Yogpeeth Trust in Haridwar, an institution that does research in the healing powers of yoga and Ayurveda. The trust also provides many free services to all its visitors. Baba Ramdev's educational shows have been broadcast on many religious TV channels like Aastha, and other TV channels like Zee Network, Sahara One and India TV; and the swami holds many yoga camps across the country and even abroad. In 2007 the KIIT University (Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology) awarded the swami with an honorary doctorate degree for his contribution towards popularizing the Vedic science of yoga. Prof. M S Swaminathan is the Founder Chairman of the M S Swaminathan Research Foundation & UNESCO Chair in Ecotechnology. He has been acclaimed by the TIME magazine as one of the twenty most influential Asians of the 20th century and one of the only three from India, the other two being Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore. He has been described by the United Nations Environment Programme as "the Father of Economic Ecology" because of his leadership of the ever-green revolution movement in agriculture and by Javier Perez de Cuellar, Secretary General of the United Nations, as "a living legend who will go into the annals of history as a world scientist of rare distinction". He was Chairman of the UN Science Advisory Committee set up in 1980 to take follow-up action on the Vienna Plan of Action. He has also served as Independent Chairman of the FAO Council (1981-85) and President of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (1984-90). He was President of the World Wide Fund for Nature (India) from 1989-96. He also served as President of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs (2002-07), President of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (1991-96 and 2005-07) and Chairman, National Commission on Farmers (2004-06). He was a trustee of Bibliotheca Alexandrina in its formative years. He served as Director of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (1961-72), Director General of Indian Council of Agricultural Research and Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Agricultural Research and Education (1972-79), Principal Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture (1979-80), Acting Deputy Chairman and later Member (Science and Agriculture), Planning Commission (1980-82) and Director General, International Rice Research Institute, the Philippines (1982-88). A plant geneticist by training, Professor Swaminathan's contributions to the agricultural renaissance of India have led to his being widely referred to as the scientific leader of the green revolution movement. His advocacy of sustainable agriculture leading to an ever-green revolution makes him an acknowledged world leader in the field of sustainable food security. The International Association of Women and Development conferred on him the first international award for significant contributions to promoting the knowledge, skill, and technological empowerment of women in agriculture and for his pioneering role in mainstreaming gender considerations in agriculture and rural development. Professor Swaminathan was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership in 1971, the Albert Einstein World Science Award in 1986, the first World Food Prize in 1987, and Volvo, Tyler and UNEP Sasakawa Prize for Environment, the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development in 2000 and the Franklin D Roosevelt Four Freedoms Medal, the Mahatma Gandhi Prize of UNESCO in 2000 and the Lal Bahadur Sastri National Award (2007). He is the recipient of Padma Shri (1967), Padma Bhushan (1972) and Padma Vibushan (1989).

Ratan N Tata was the Chairman of Tata Sons, one of the two promoter holding companies of the Tata group, from 1991 till his retirement on December 28, 2012. He was also chairman of the major Tata companies, including Tata Motors, Tata Steel, Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Power, Tata Global Beverages, Tata Chemicals, Indian Hotels and Tata Teleservices. During his tenure, the group?s revenues grew manifold, totalling over $100 billion in 2011-12. Mr Tata is also associated with various organisations in India and overseas. He is the chairman of two of the largest private-sector-promoted philanthropic trusts in India. He is a member of the Indian Prime Minister?s Council on Trade and Industry. He is the president of the Court of the Indian Institute of Science and chairman of the Council of Management of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. He also serves on the board of trustees of Cornell University and the University of Southern California. Mr Tata serves on the board of directors of Alcoa, and is also on the international advisory boards of Mitsubishi Corporation, JP Morgan Chase, Rolls-Royce, Temasek Holdings and the Monetary Authority of Singapore. Mr Tata received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Cornell in 1962. He worked briefly with Jones and Emmons in Los Angeles before returning to India in late 1962. He completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School in 1975. The Government of India honoured Mr Tata with its second-highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan, in 2008. He has also received honorary doctorates from several universities in India and overseas.

She started a project named ?Nanhi Chhaan?, a movement to save girl child and trees. An initiative to fight against female feticide and to empower women in rural areas. This initiative has now an active presence in schools, colleges, gurudwaras, temples, churches, panchayats and various municipal centres. Nanhi Chhaan assists in setting up self-help groups (SHGs) for women across the state that in turn spread awareness not only about female feticide but also about other issues such as dealing with cancer, agriculture, farmer?s issues, environmental issues and the ever depleting forest cover. The SHGs also help the women collectively set up small businesses and manage their savings in a more efficient manner. Nanhi Chhaan initiative has opened 75 Silaai centres (stitching centres) at villages, where training is provided to more than 1900 girls in stitching clothes, weaving durries (traditional Punjabi mats) and phulkari (a traditional embroidery technique of Punjab used to decorate shawls and scarves). She also launched an initiative ?SAANJH? under which hundreds of textiles training centres were opened and thousands of girls from rural Punjab are trained every year and are imparted training in traditional embroidery art ?Phulkari? and ?Durry? making and are made financially independent.

Subhash Ghai is an Indian film director, producer and screenwriter, known for his works predominantly in Hindi cinema. His most notable films include Kalicharan (1976), Karz (1980), Hero (1983), Meri Jung (1985), Karma (1986), Ram Lakhan (1989), Saudagar (1991), Khalnayak (1993), Pardes (1997), Taal (1999), and Black & White (2008). In 1982, he started Mukta Arts Private Limited which, in 2000, became a public company, with Subhash Ghai as its executive chairman. In 2006, he received the National Film Award, for producing the social problem film Iqbal. Ghai started his career in Hindi cinema as an actor with small roles in films including Taqdeer (1967) and Aradhana (1971). He was the male lead in the 1970s Umang, and Gumraah (1976). His directorial debut was the film Kalicharan (1976) which he obtained through a recommendation by Shatrughan Sinha. As of 2016, he has written and directed a total of 16 movies. In the 1980s and 1990s, he formed a collaboration with Dilip Kumar whom he directed in Vidhaata (1982), Karma (1986) and Saudagar (1991), the latter for which he won the Filmfare Best Director Award. He introduced Jackie Shroff as a leading actor in Hero (1983) and helped establish Anil Kapoor?s rising career with Meri Jung (1985) for which he was nominated for a Filmfare Best Actor Award[citation needed] . He went on to frequently work with Shroff and Anil Kapoor, casting them together in the films Karma (1986), Ram Lakhan (1989) and Trimurti (1995) which he had produced and was directed by Mukul S. Anand. His 1993 release Khalnayak starring Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit and Shroff featured the songs ?nayak nahin khalnayak hu main? and ?Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai?. After a three-year hiatus from directing, he returned in 2008 with Black and White released on 7 March 2008 and, later Yuvvraaj released in November 2008 which didn?t perform well at the box office. A. R. Rahman stated in an interview that Ghai had asked him to use the words ?Jai Ho? in a song.

He was also a member of the Industrial Development Advisory Board (a Department of Trade and Industry appointment) 1999-2005. Lord Paul is currently Vice-Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Anti-Corruption. He has been Chancellor of the University of Wolverhampton since 1999 and was Chancellor of the University of Westminster from 2006 to 2014. Lord Paul holds 15 honorary degrees in recognition of his contributions to business, the economy and his social and charitable works. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 1983 and granted the Freedom of the City of London in 1998.

Vigdis Finnbogadottir is the legendary and historic ex President of Iceland and the only female leader to be the longest-serving elected female head of State of any Country. President of Iceland for four terms and sixteen years from 1980 to 1996, she was the world’s first democratically directly elected female president.
She was earlier also the Artistic Director of the Reykjavik Theatre Company (Leikfélag Reykjavikur). After her popular and successful term concluding in 1996, she became founding chair of the Council of Women World Leaders at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. She was soon also appointed President of the UNESCO World Commission on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology.

Threety Irani was born in Colombo, Sri Lanka and lived there till her marriage in 1956 when she came to Kolkata and has lived here since then. She has three daughters, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Her husband C.R. Irani was editor of the Statesman till his death in 2005.
She is a Member of the International Guild of Beauty Therapists and the Independent Professional Therapists and a Post Graduate in Skin Therapy from the Arnold-Taylor Organization, London. She has served on the Union Public Service Commission in choosing teachers in Beauty Therapy for government sponsored courses. She has also served on Committees of the West Bengal Government and helped them to set up their first Beauty Training School in their Polytechnic in Ballygunge, Kolkata. She has her own training school which she started in 1977 and has been responsible in helping her students to set up their own saloon in the 1980’s and 1990’s all over North East India, Bihar and Orissa.
She and her dauthter Nilufer, who works with her, travelled to Bihar where they give training to village girls. Nilufer also trains the wives of Jawans at the Army Welfare Association and under priviledged girls at Kamas Kutis.
‘Womans World’, her beauty saloon which she opened in 1977 was the first of its kind in Eastern India. She remembers that in the first two days more than a hundred ladies walked in to see what this skin care clinic was all about. When she started her twin daughters, Nulufer and Nisvan were therapists (they are both highly qualified), Ratti the eldest was the Receptionist and she had a hairdresser and her sister was also doing hair-dressing, manicures and pedicures. Today, forty years later, ‘Womans World’ has a large and loyal clientele, and there are families coming for three and four generations.
Threety, still at the age of 84, goes to the Saloon three times a week and meets her clients, checks their skins and advises them on skin and hair care. She and Nilufer do a weekly “question and answers’ column in the Evolue Section of the Statesman.

On September 1, 2018 Michelle Bachelet assumed her functions as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights was established in 1993 and Ms. Bachelet is the seventh Commissioner. Ms. Bachelet was elected President of Chile on two occasions (2006 ? 2010 and 2014 ? 2018). She was the first female president of Chile, as well as Chile?s and Latin America?s first female Defense Minister (2000 ? 2002). She also served as Health Minister (2002 ? 2004). In 2011, she was named the first Director of UN Women, an organization dedicated to fighting for the rights of women and girls internationally. Economic empowerment and ending violence against women were two of her priorities during her tenure. After finishing her second term in March 2018, she was named Chair of the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health, an alliance of more than 1000 organizations in 192 countries from the sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health communities. Michelle Bachelet has a Medical Degree in Surgery, with a specialization in Pediatrics and Public Health. She also studied military strategy at Chile?s National Academy of Strategy and Policy and at the Inter-American Defense College in the United States.

Jan Morgan founded Grosvenor International, her up market real estate brokerage. This primarily focuses on Central London and serves high profile figures, top executives and people from the media world who require a discreet, hands-on, bespoke service. Jan Morgan has been an active member of the International Women?s Forum for over 20 years and is the past President of IWF London. She is now concentrating on support for Northern Ireland working with a group of European Presidents to extend and enrich IWF in Europe. Her interests include all aspects of health. She is a Life Patron and former Chair of Alzheimer?s Research UK in Cambridge and a Trustee of the Royal Free Hospital NHS Trust. She established and runs LOST (Lithuanian Orphans Support Trust) in aid of the two State orphanages in Vilnius. She trained originally as a nurse at University College Hospital, London and is an award winning garden designer and gardener. Jan loves classical music, especially opera; design and architecture; good food, travel and entertaining her family and friends. Latterly she has, with friends and supporters, transformed the facilities for the children in the two Lithuanian State Orphanages, for which she founded ?LOST?, (Lithuanian Orphans Support Trust) She sends a pre-Christmas truckload of clothes and toys annually, and has set up an award system to motivate and improve the education and behaviour of the children. Dr. G. Natchiar is one of the founding members of, Aravind Eye Care System. She has served the organization in several capacities and is currently the Director Emeritus. One of her greatest contributions as a founding member was the introduction of Aravind?s paramedical program. For over forty years, this program has been empowering young women from rural backgrounds, training and transforming them into world-class eye care professionals. Dr. Natchiar headed the community outreach programme which is the cornerstone of Aravind?s high volume work. She played an instrumental role in initiating and scaling an innovative service delivery model for rural populations through Aravind?s vision centers and outreach activities. She initiated and implemented a rigorous process to audit the quality, service, performance, and academic development in each area of the hospital across the Aravind Eye Care System. Post-retirement, Dr. Natchiar spends most of her time in farming. Aurofarm, which she completely manages, was recently certified organic by the Govt. of Tamil Nadu. The farm amidst 80 acres of greenery bears testimony to her untiring passion for farming.

Jehan Sadat has become an activist and a contributing participant in international women?s conferences and a catalyst for women?s movements in the Middle East and the Third World. Mrs. Sadat began her social activities several years before her husband, Anwar Sadat, became President of Egypt. She started a women?s emancipation movement in Talla, which was Anwar Sadat?s village town. From the beginning, this movement was aimed at helping women become more self-sufficient and less dependent on their husbands. Among time activist in social work, Mrs. Sadat was among the first to reach the Suez front in 1967 to visit and comfort the wounded. She has devoted a great deal of her time to establishing the ?Al-Wafa Wa Amal? (Faith and Hope) Society in Egypt. This society built the largest hospital in the Middle East for the treatment of war wounded and the largest rehabilitation center for the treatment of handicapped veterans and children. Al-Wafa Wa Amal is a fully integrated city for handicapped war veterans and civilians, complete with clinics, rehabilitation centers, vocational training departments and recreation areas. It was designed to accommodate two thousand patients. The Wafa Wa Amal city, founded by Mrs. Sadat in 1972, depends totally on donations from all over the world. In 1977, Mrs. Sadat initiated the idea of S. O. S. Children?s villages International are designed to offer needy orphans the opportunity to lead a normal family life, within a happy and healthy atmosphere. Among her major concern have been more concentrated efforts for implicating programs for family planning and for eradicating illiteracy. It is her firm belief that ?the most precious capital any country can have is an educated citizen.? She was instrumental in pushing through the Egyptian Parliament, the first ever, family laws and amendments to existing laws which gave women some equality in family affairs. These family laws give the wife automatic custody of children in case of divorce, boys until the age of thirteen and girls until the marry. Most importantly, in addition to alimony and child support, the divorced Wife was to be automatically awarded the family dwelling. In 1975, Mrs. Sadat headed the Egyptian Delegation to the International Women?s conference in Mexico city. She also represented Egypt in Copenhagen, Denmark and in New York at the United Nation. She was elected Chairperson of her village council for five consecutive years and she founded the Arab African Women?s League. Among the many organizations and charitable associations that Mrs. Sadat has either founded or headed are; The Egyptian Red Crescent Society; The Egyptian Blood Bank Society; The Egyptian Society for Cancer Patients; The Egyptian Society for Biomedical Engineering; The Scientific Association for Egyptian Women; The Higher Committee for Children; The Egyptian Society for the Welfare of University and Higher Institute Students; The Egyptian Society for the Preservation of Antiquities and the Society for Saving the Ecology. At the age of forty, she entered Cairo University and obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in Arabic Literature, Mrs. Sadat graduated at the top of her class. The same year she graduated, she was appointed Lecturer in Arabic Literature at Cairo University where she taught and lectured for a number of years. Mrs. Sadat went on to earn both her Master of Arts degree in 1980 and her Ph.D. in October 1986 from Cairo University.
