If adversity is the touchstone of character, Sreedevi Unni stands out with her steely resolve and positivity. Hailing from a traditional Nair family of Calicut, Kerala, young Sreedevi sharpened her dancing skills while Kerala’s very own dance form Mohiniyattam was undergoing revival after the ban during colonial rule. Sreedevi’s tireless efforts to perform and promote Mohiniyattam was perhaps the earliest signs of her willingness to fight the odds.
The entrepreneur in her came to the fore to setup a screen-printing business supporting women earn independent living and subsequently diversified into marketing leather wallets and finally graduated to manufacture of leather goods. All these years her family also got her due attention. Despite the shocking demise of daughter Monisha, the celebrity actress at the peak of glory, Sreedevi rose like a proverbial phoenix into heights of achievements organizing Mega cultural events including dance festivals christened MohiniNrityotsav. Today, her repertoire of skills encompasses modelling, acting, choreography, theatre and teaching. Awards bestowed upon her include the Kalashree award from Karnataka and Kerala, The Woman of substance award (2013), Lifetime contribution award to Mohiniyattam (2013) Maharaja Swatitirunal Excellency Award (2017) Sreedevi embodies everything the modern woman stands for_ Talent, tenacity, Humility and steely self-belief!
