The great Pablo Casals once said – “The greatest respect an artist can pay to music is to give it life.” –
India’s traditional music, including Hindustani and Classical music, has always has immense appeal among audiences whether national or International. The art of classical singing is being practiced in the Indian subcontinent since ages. The art is popular, not as a form of entertainment, but as a means of connecting with the Divine Being. I had the privilege to see this kind of passion evolve and bloom in a little girl, as I always call her, Safa Khan.
A child prodigy indeed!
Ever since I have known Safa, she has been singing. Singing is like oxygen to her soul. Unlike most kids of her age, Safa, besotted with music, has already made a name for herself as an artist, with her rhythm and modulating voice making its foray into the music world in India and Kuwait. Blessed with a maverick streak, Safa showcases sublime powers of spontaneous creation in a raga!
According to her mother, Shagufta Khan, young Safa’s interest in Music unfolded when she was just a toddler. “It all started at the age of 5, when she sang the unforgettable “Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehana” in her UKG Graduation Ceremony, and then her vocal chords started playing its magic with the musical notes. Safa made her official debut in the much awaited Shibani Kashyap Extravagant show way back in 2008 and started her musical journey. Her vibrant performance in “Ambassador of Comedy” was applauded and she earned many accolades for singing the classic –my heart will go on from the blockbuster “Titanic”.
Safa began her formal education in music with her local mentor, Mrs. Keka Mukherjee and accomplished her junior diploma in vocal classical from West Bengal. Sangeet Maestro Ajoy chakrobarthyji, Manjusha Bedekarji played an eminent role in guiding Safa’s musical journey. She is relentlessly pursuing her Hindustani Classical music at Mumbai. Recently she Created Euphoria in her maternal hometown- Raipur by being a part of Band-Rockers as their lead singer.
Safa gathered many feathers to her cap by rendering her melodious voice with stalwarts and veterans like Kavita Krishnamurthy, Kumar Sanu, Alka Yagnik, Shreya Ghosal , Adnan Sami, to name a few!
She has always been very creative-her imagination is constantly producing something new and extraordinary!” She considers herself blessed to get an opportunity to sing along with Bollywood’s big-wigs like Salim Suleiman, Richa Sharma, .Vinod Rathod, Javed Ali, Himesh Reshamiya Meet Brothers, Sachin-Jigar, Mohit Chauhan, Daler Mehndi, Anuradha Paudwal, Amit Kumar and none other than Hariharan ji.
She equally shares the stage with Ghazal maestro Jaswinder Singh & Shishir Parkhi.
Safa has performed with Haricharan Seshadri (Indian Vocalist, Playback singer & Musician), who mostly works in Tamil, Malayalam and Telugu film industries.
Safa’s music’s unsurpassed expressiveness and virtuosity is what makes her unique amidst her other contemporaries.
She truly embraces the sensation of flying with her voice!
May she scale greater heights in her musical exploration with the sound of music… we wish her immense luck and would like to quote from the Great Pablo Picasso – learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist… Safa Khan, a fresh, new voice to define music!!!
