Ecuatoriana and first woman to have held the positions of President and Vice President of the Republic of Ecuador. She was Deputy Minister of Culture and Minister of Education. Former Secretary General of the Organisation of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty.

She is a lawyer, a Juris Doctor, a graduate of journalism and holds a master’s degree in anthropology.

She was Secretary-General of OTCA, Member of the Encyclopedia Britannica Publishing Council, Member of the Board of Directors of CATIE, University of Costa Rica. She is currently the Executive President of FIDAL Foundation, a member of the World Academy of Arts and Sciences, she is a member of the Board of Directors of the Library of Alexandria in Egypt, an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Doctors of Europe and chair of the board of directors of the Panamazonia of Manaus – Brazil. She is also adviser on education to the China – America Commercial Association of California and member of the University SEK of Ecuador Board of Honour.


She has received various awards, among them: Order of the Congress of Colombia in the grade of Grand Cross, awarded in Santafe de Bogota, Usaid award – Manaus, Brazil, Green of the Americas award – Brazil, IV. Award of Ecotourism and Sustainability. Order of Cartographic Merit – Grand Officer – by the Navy of Brazil. Administrator Emeritus of the Amazon, distinction awarded by the network of the Universities Amazon-UNAMAZ – Brazil and the Rio Branco in the grade of Grand Cross – Government of Brazil. She received the highest decoration from the Legislative Assembly of the State of Goias in Brazil; and the Castillo Azul award. Governor of Tarija – Bolivia. This year 2018 she received Amazonense citizenship from the Legislative Assembly of the State of Amazonas.

She is a Honoris Causa Professor at the University of Tarapoto in Peru and a Honoris Causa Doctor at the International University of California.


She has published 14 books of essays, poetic prose, poetry, short stories, children’s and youth literature. Her poems have been part of several anthologies in Ecuador and other countries.

She gives lectures, promotes the education and care of the environment, works for some media and national and international publications. She has opinion spaces in audiovisual media.
