India

Mrs Vidya Raju, wife of Commodore NVS Raju (Retd), is an MA, BEd. In earlier years, she served as a teacher in Naval Children Schools and Kendriya Vidyalayas. Over the years, she has taken to bird-watching big-time and became an active member of the India chapter of World Wide Fund for Nature (Asia), the Nature Conservation Organisation and has participated/organised several bird-watching treks. Presently, she is an active volunteer for birding with Cochin Natural History Society (CNHS).
Sometime ago, Vidya made deft use of her association with the Blue Cross Society to deepen her understanding of reptiles as well. The sight of Blue Cross volunteers cleaning the injured fangs of a cobra with anti-septic to ease its pain taught her the value of compassion.
She has saved and nurtured a number of injured birds and other animals and has been an active member in all societies she had exposure to in various cities as she moved from place to place because of her husband’s transfers. A philanthropist, she has always been of help to fellow beings and cares to visit orphanages, old age homes and hospitals to give comfort to inmates. She has helped and contributed immensely during the 2018 Kerala floods.
In recognition of her selfless service that she has always provided to the naval community, the Chief of the Naval Staff has awarded her On-the-Spot Commendation on the 07 May 2014.
