Meghna Agarwal

Director & Founder at Gallery Kolkata

Kolkata, India

Meghna Agarwala is the founder of Gallery Kolkata, a prominently placed 5000 sq.ft. gallery in the heart of Kolkata, on Shakespeare Sarani. The gallery with its classy looks is the culmination of a long journey since student hood for Meghna. Her passion for the beautiful, exclusive and aesthetically pleasing, international exposure to conducting business with her father, and visits to encourage her painter sister to many galleries and museums all over the world, all worked towards her growing passion for collecting art and then becoming a gallerist.
Meghna was still very young when Names-An-Art was opened in the domain of her home in Ballygunge, where she opened with a show named ‘First Show’. Small works priced reasonably acquired from all the renowned artists of Kolkata – Paritosh Sen, Sunil Das, Prokash Karmakar etc – made for a successful show, where, apart from regular art enthusiasts, artists and their artworks were introduced to a younger crowd of prospective art enthusiasts of Kolkata. Soon in 2007 Gallery Kolkata in its present avatar opened with a grand show of many artists, both, senior and contemporary, modern and post-modern, from all over India. Through the years Gallery Kolkata has mounted many important curated shows within its premises, always with the aim to bridge the chasm between art connoisseurs and artists. Thus many young artists found a platform here to showcase their artworks and reach out to wide array of viewers.
Meghna travels abroad extensively to arm herself with an in-depth knowledge of the art world and its dynamics; has studied art curating at the Sotheby’s Institute of Art and studied various short programs like Marketing at the Columbia Business School and constantly educated herself in other areas of interest to help her grow as a gallerist and business-woman. Her entrepreneurial success was epitomized by her being awarded the FICCI FLO excellence award of 2010-11. She has been socially conscious and been involved in supporting various social causes through the medium of art like the Maneka Gandhi’s People for Animals, various programs and support to Rotary India, Concern India Foundation ;raising funds for the Tsunami victims and contributing to the chief minister’s fund et al.
Her unbounded enthusiasm for all things beautiful is evident from the rather wacky but strangely beautiful looking furniture that is scattered informally around the gallery. They add an air of bohemia to the space, and reflect the eclectic taste of its owner. Meghna plans to transform the gallery into an artistically holistic space where the Fine arts would be displayed with exclusive articles from other creative disciplines like textiles, jewellery, watches, furniture, et al. She is ambitious and always raring to go and do something unexpected, out-of-the-box, in line with the current international gallery trends.
In times to come soon, Meghna Agarwala is all set to turn Gallery Kolkata into a very interesting multifaceted art space, where anyone with a love for the Arts, exclusive textiles, objets d’art, jewellery, etc, will find it delightful and heartwarming to visit .
