Marty B Handlon
Mayor of Alabaster
Ms. Marty Handlon was elected Mayor of Alabaster in October 2012. She has over 20 years of experience in accounting and financial management, and had the desire to use her skills and experience to benefit the city she loves. As mayor, Marty provides leadership with a fresh perspective, a combination of her experiences from the private sector corporate culture and state government, for the benefit of Alabaster. She has used a teamwork approach to building a better organization for city services, including financial accountability, open lines of communication, and government transparency for all. Marty is a Certified Public Accountant with a Master’s in Business Administration. Originally from Montgomery, Marty worked for the State of Alabama until her husband’s job moved their family to Alabaster in 1997. Before becoming Alabaster’s first female mayor, Marty was an active member of the community while raising her family, serving in her church, schools, and sports booster clubs. Her hobbies include soaking up the peaceful surroundings on any beach, reading a good book, and playing golf with her family. During her tenure as mayor, Marty was nominated, selected, and graduated from both the Shelby County Leadership and the Metro Birmingham Leadership programs. She is a firm believer in being a lifelong learner, and if we are not growing, we are dying.
