Critical Thinking Professor, Phd In Molecular Biology, Anti-Gmo Activist
Margarida Silva was born in Pombal, Portugal, in 1963 and graduated from the Portuguese State University at Coimbra in 1986 with a B.Sc. in Biology. That same year she started her academic career at the Biotechnology College of the Portuguese Catholic University in Porto, Portugal, where she now is a Professor and teaches critical thinking, communication and creative writing . In between she carried out her M.Sc. and Ph.D. studies in molecular biology at Cornell University in the USA. Research interests include risk issues, namely around genetic engineering, sustainable development planning, solid waste management and environmental education. As a citizen activist she coordinated for 20 years the national anti-GMO coalition which, for most of that time, was the lone voice raising awareness on genetically modified food in Portugal.
