Manju Tantia

Kolkata, India

From Manju Tantia’s earliest years autobiographies, stories of the lives of National Heroes, Saints and Artists have fascinated her. She read a lot and a desire formed – she wanted to do something – to achieve something – the big Question was – what ?
Her answer came in 1975 when her mother introduced her to Smt. KrishnaJi Khaitan – a Co-founder member of Jyotirmai Club. A new direction to my life had opened and there was no looking back. She put all my energies in the working of this organization. No work was small. Slowly and gradually the organization started flourishing.
Today Jyotirmai runs 12 Dispensaries in and around Kolkata. It has its own building where a Medical Clinic is run for the Public. Heart and Eye surgeries are sponsored. There is also an English Medium School where 200 under privileged children are educated.
Well known amongst all housewives, Shilpam and its food department, is no minor achievement. It gives employment to 250 village women in the field of Knitting, Embroidery, paper craft, masalas & pickles, providing vital revenue support to their family income.
The latest venture of this organization is the adoption of Purva Gopal Nagar Village where pure drinking water is being supplied to 300 homes.
Her long association with Jyotirmai Club has given her immense satisfaction. It has provided her with a Platform to develop her personality and utilize her time and energy to serve the Society. This experience has been extremely fulfilling.
She can only say that every woman should have two careers – one at home and one outside.
