Using the knowledge of aquaponics and multi-layer indoor plant growth Riverfood combined all these ideas to start the production of top quality, pesticide- and antibiotics-free, fresh food within cities. But food production is not the only goal, Riverfood is also keen to spread its knowledge about aquaponics systems. As such Riverfood also functions as an educational center, providing tours and workshops and as an advisory for anyone wanting to start their own aquaponics business.

The topics fueling the ideas behind Riverfood were the ever-increasing human population with its food demand, the accompanying worldwide negative effects, food safety, food security, sustainability, circular economy, people-planet-profit and bringing food production into cities.
