Kanwal Chaudri

Design Development, HARZAN EXPORT HOUSE

India

Among the first women to go abroad Germany – Beaux Arts Switzerland – to study Art & Design. On return decided to contribute to India Development and became consultant Design and States, with Handloom Handicraft Export Cooperation, under Mrs. Pupul Jayakar. She worked tirelessly to open up export markets, and even spent a year in Japan. She then represented Bloomingdales and Worldwide stores and started the India Exposure of India Festivals, and expansive research and foreign interest in creativity and expansion of the export markets. Kanwal also conceived of starting a University of Crafts and Artisans, whereby the artisan in trained in a particular craft and receives a Streeniketan or Artisan India Degree, regardless whether they are educated in other ways. This degree would then be recognized by the export industry. She was also instrumental in bringing NIFT to India, and has been on their Jury.
With her worldwide experience, this idea was partially realized with Former Prime Minister Chandra Shekharji at Bondsi. She would like the present ministry to pursue this concept, and work actively towards making an Artisan a respected recognized person.
* Multilinguist and already a recipient of many awards, Kanwal Chaudri has given a lifetime to India Development and Economic growth.
