My first business was called Resilient People because I really believe that resilience is the key to being a high achiever. I’ve worked in challenging environments to raise the bar by focusing on training through cognitive and emotional pathways resulting in people taking a much more proactive approach to effect change in their lives and in their workplace.
My sporting background as a competitor and a coach in the sport of slalom kayaking has taken me to some very rugged rivers all over the world, from Nepal to New Zealand and the US and I’ve swam down several of them. Clearly our mindset plays a huge part in our success. I’ve seen very talented paddlers ‘bomb out’ badly as soon as they go somewhere new or have to compete at a high level so it was vital for me to understand that mind body connection. My passion for all things wellbeing, mental health and resilience is very much linked to improving performance, staying well and being the best that we can be.
A few years down the track I had a Eureka moment when I learned about the Working with Resilience assessment tool and really wanted to become a trainer. The solid nature of the research behind it and it’s worldwide success got me really excited because it authenticated what I was doing and added extra scientific evidence to the process I was so interested in.
The practical elements of the survey and the coaching tools made such a fantastic fit with my own background so I now have a unique analytical evidence based tool blending beautifully with the cognitive and emotional development pathway I had used as a coach for years.
To create a great team, you need to start with yourself. I still work at being resilient and know that I can work with you to develop that successful mindset and the skills you need to do well in business.
A life long love of learning means I’m always reading up on the latest research and I keep my brain active learning Italian and working with a group in Italy. Fitness is the key to living longer so I cycle and kayak and to keep myself together I practise yoga and qigong each day. Spending time with our Aboriginal Elders to learn more about this land is also very important to me because we all benefit from that sense of connection to community.
As a teacher and a coach of twenty plus years I’ve seen stress in its many guises and been able to help people to make the change that will see them become more focused and motivated to travel in the direction they want to go.
Mixing complementary therapies with the latest research on stress management and retraining your brain, I’ve been able to look at the whole ‘wellness’ picture. Add to that the more formal reporting offered by the ‘Working with Resilience’ toolbox, an advanced reporting method used by psychologists worldwide and you have a system that provides all round support.
My success has been founded on learning how the mind and the body interact. Developing and facilitating training which incorporates that duality, has helped me to create exciting new courses to strengthen awareness of the mind and body connection using the 4’A’s as a focus.
