For over 30 years, Dr. Concannon has been counselling individuals and teaching the psychology of Personality, in particular the work of Carl Gustav Jung, the great Swiss psychiatrist. One of Jung’s many profound insights is that human beings do not become ‘perfect’, but we can become more ‘whole’, more complete.
Dr. Concannon believes that every crisis creates the opportunity for you to grow towards that wholeness; as you discover new aspects of your personality you will begin to experience life more joyously. Her approach varies with your needs – at times the focus will be on your specific problems and finding solutions, as in Brief Therapy. Other clients want to develop their personalities and with them she uses the Humanistic approach, encouraging positive growth, maximizing your potential to create the envionment in which you can best flourish.
Born in the USA of Irish American parents, Maureen Concannon came to Ireland to spend a year abroad studying at U.C.D. and living with her great aunt and uncle, Peig and Martin Conlon, both of whom were active in the struggle for Irish freedom. Not only did she stay to take her degree, but decided to remain in the country of her ancestors, joining the administrative staff of the university for several years before marrying. She has three children and four grandchildren, and a large extended family in the US.
Dr. Concannon founded the English Language Institute, one of the first English language schools for foreigners in Ireland where she was Director for twenty-three years, using her training as an educational psychologist to formulate assessment exams, train teachers and promote Irish education on the Continent and in the USA. The first International meetings of TEFL experts East and West took place at two Conferences held in Dublin under the aegis of the English Language Institute.
Later she turned her focus as a psychologist on the Healing of families, intergenerational healing as advocated by British psychiatrist Ken McAll and the work of Carl Jung. She taught these courses, as well as Awareness, Consciousness Raising techniques, Meditation techniques, Psychology of Personality, Psychic development, and other courses to adults at U.C.D. and at the Counselling Centre in Stephen’s Green.
She currently directs the Centre for Consciousness Studies, affiliated with the SMARTlab, and co-supervises PhDs in these important areas.
She has written a number of books on Irish families and has sponsored Clan Gatherings for the purpose of inter-generational healing.
She is well known as the leading world expert in the Sheela na gigs: the ancient female symbology of old Ireland.
