Carlos Coelho is Member to the European Parliament (PSD, EPP) since 1994.. He is member of the IMCO (Internal Market and Consumer Protection) and LIBE (Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs) Committees. He is member of the STOA (Science and Technology Options Assessment) Panel, nominated by the IMCO Committee. In Portugal, Mr. Coelho is the coordinator of “EurocienciaPT”, a scientific network that connects scientists to politicians and aims to debate the impact of technology on society and the role of politics in promoting innovation.

He was Member of the Portuguese Parliament and of the Portuguese Government. Mr. Coelho was chair of the Temporary committee on the Echelon interception system and of the Temporary Committee on the alleged use of European countries by the CIA for the transport and illegal detention of prisoners. He was also rapporteur of several reports, such has on e-Passports, SIS II, the new Schengen evaluation mechanism or the enlargement of Schengen to Bulgaria and Romania. Currently, he is rapporteur for the Schengen Information System (SIS) reform and he is President of the European Parliament Task Force for Schengen. Author and co-author of many publications, such as “Europe from A to Z”, he was President of “Instituto Francisco Sá Carneiro”, the think tank of PSD (Social Democratic Party in Portugal). Mr. Coelho was president of the “Juventude Social Democrata (JSD)”, the PSD youth structure.
