Martial Artist

New Zealand

Barnard Teng, is a practising martial artist. in particular Wing Chun, Wu Shu, and Tae Kwon Do. Through this, he has developed his interest in the practise of Zen, and its application to martial arts, meditation, and to the wider aspects of his life,
“I’ve found in all my time of practising martial arts (30 years), that the secret, that is true for all aspects of life, is ‘Balance and Relaxation.’ If you don’t have this, then when the pressure is becomes too much, and you are not relaxed, then your reaction, and emotions will not be of your true self. Through the practise of relaxation, one can at once see all, and react with directness of intent. Relaxation is Key”
Barnard Teng is also a practising Architectural designer, based in New Zealand. He has also practised in the UK, Spain, Italy, Singapore and China. Projects ranging from private residences, to high end retail like Louis Vuitton, Versace V2, Burberry London & Barcelona flagship store, design leader on ‘The Base’ Shopping complex; Air New Zealand Domestic Kuru Lounge, and Air New Zealand Holiday Store.
In between has has been involved in other types of design such as web, logo, product and furniture.
“there is a fire to be maintained, it is fire of the design”.
Barney Teng has guest critiqued at the Auckland University School of Architecture, and guest lectured at the School of Spatial Design at Auckland University of Technology (AUT).
“I believe in the art of silence and all the beauty that it evokes. Minimalism when done with care gives the scale of humanity, a moment to look within, and maintain one’s own fire. It is the voice of forming a comfort of order against the unknown order that is chaos of the exterior environment. The proof of this is when the design disappears and becomes something more.”
