Ms Barbara Wood is an Oncology Psychotherapist, Founder and CEO of boob buddies Inc. a not-for-profit charity in Queensland Australia established to provide free in-home oncology psychotherapeutic support to children and adults affected by cancer, a keynote global speaker, educator, and author.
Over many years as an Oncology Psychotherapist, it became increasingly evident to Ms. Wood that holistic care provided for children and adults affected by cancer was suboptimal.
Ms Wood observed that the need for free in-home oncology psychotherapeutic support was essential to a cancer patients’ well-being as it had a profound positive effect on their levels of stress. Which is of the utmost importance, as negative stress can affect tumour growth, progression, and metastasis.
For the time Ms Wood spends with cancer patients she brings a slice of normality to their lives. They are no longer defined by their cancer, they are just themselves. She does this by placing great emphasis on ‘the here and now’, and by acknowledging the importance of ‘hope’, the one thing that cancer cannot take away.
As this invaluable service has helped, and continues to help, innumerable cancer patients and their families, Ms Wood fervently believes that ‘in-home oncology psychotherapeutic support’ should be an integral component of a cancer patients’ treatment regime, and not an option.
