Born on 12 th September, 1935 at Tura. Her father being a civil servant, Arati had her early schooling in Barpeta, Goalpara, Nagao, Lakhimpur, Jorhat. She matriculated from Shillong and studied in Lady Keane College Shillong.
An inborn artist, she was a regular performer in school and children’s programs. She was selected as a drama artist of Akashvani in 1948 and had been performing in radio plays since then. She’s been also active on the stage both in Shillong and Guwahati and has performed in more than 100 plays with great artists like Phani Sharma among others. Among her plays Girish Karnads Tughlak is of special mention.
Her screen career began with Bhaben Saikia’s Sandhyaraag in 1976. Since then she has acted in over 25 films and TV serials. Irfan Khan was her co star in Mritunjoy. She acted in the Award winning Sonar Boron Pakhi a bio pic on Pratima Pandey at the age of 82.
Arati Barua is socially active in women’s empowerment through Mitali Sangha and now heads Nabina Sangha, a ladies organisation which brings all age groups together in an attempt to foster a warm atmosphere in homes and create community feelings in a insular society
Arati Barua heads the Luit Konwar Rudra Barua Memorial Trust and has written a book on the songs of her legendary husband and artist/singer Rudra Barua.
