Allison Roberts

Chocolate Maker, Exploding Tree

Ireland

Allison Roberts is one of that tiny handful of people who, whilst working with food, are quietly changing the world.
Ms Roberts does this, firstly, by revealing to people exactly what chocolate is. For Ms Roberts, cocoa is a life-giving wholefood, and the original superfood. She sources her beans from the Kuapa Kukoo Fairtrade farming co-operative in Ghana, from where they are shipped to her micro bean-to-bar chocolate factory in Clonakilty (Ireland). There, she hand makes delightful bars of healthful chocolate.
But chocolate is only one medium Ms Roberts has for making the world a better place. For the last 10 years, Allison has been pushing towards a ‘zero-waste’ business, now using only compostable packaging and shipping orders free from plastic as well as selling completely unwrapped. She is currently documenting her family’s ‘cut-the-rubbish’ effort in a monthly column in the West Cork People and hopes for her business and column to encourage others to embrace simplicity and community. Allison is a passionate cycling advocate and organizes the Clonakilty Bicycle Festival in her hometown of Clonakilty with her husband Justin. They are now travelling by campervan in Portugal with their 3 year old son Ari learning and seeking inspiration.
