Tunisia

Ouided Bouchamaoui is the winner of the 2015 Nobel Prize as leader of the Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet that she initiated, she played a historic and legendary role in helping her country navigate through a great time of crisis during the Arab spring, and move Tunisia to a more transparent and collaborative society with democratic processes, constitutional framework and transparent elections. She set before the Quartet the task of setting up a roadmap and a plan of action to slow down the crisis and help the economy. Following the Arab Spring revolt in Tunisia, in 2011, the nation endured a period of deep economic slump, as well as political and social unrest. In January that same year, Ouided Bouchamaoui had been elected the first woman President of the Tunisian Confederacy of Industry, Trade and Handicrafts, in recognition of the responsible stewardship demonstrated in the family business. Within weeks of her election, she initiated a strategic move to collaborate with the Tunisian General Labor Union, through signing a Social Contract. The agreement aimed to provide decent work conditions at all levels, it expanded employment opportunities, and structured wage policies – as well as helping improve competition between enterprises. Ms. Bouchamaoui then initiated a national dialogue on the economy, bringing together the Tunisian President, Prime Minister, President of the National Assembly and major participants from private and public enterprises. The quartet initiated negotiations with all parties involved in a deep political crisis, resulting in a solution acceptable to all and leading to the Nobel Peace Prize in 2015. Ms. Bouchamaoui is also Member of the Oslo Business for Peace Award Committee since January 2016. Despite all odds, her perseverance, faith and resilience bore fruit and succeeded. Her sincerity, dedication and honesty, and ability to handle complexity in dealings with people, have endeared her to all and made her the symbol par excellence of the hope and future of not just Tunisia, but for the entire. Ms. Bouchamaoui describes the open secret of her success as the ability to build win-win partnerships and relationships even among opponents. She is an exemplar of the creative and constructive force of women’s leadership to nurture dialogue, bring harmony and build peace. A businesswoman, Ms. Ouided Bouchamaoui of Tunisia leads the Hedi Bouchamaoui Group, a family owned business spanning more than a hundred years. Since May 2011, she is also the President of UTICA, the Tunisian Confederation of Industry, Trade and Handicrafts (Confederation of Private employers), first woman elected to this position. Mrs. Ouided Bouchamaoui declined thrice the offer to become Prime Minister, wishing to retain her independence, and to work as a mediator to achieve social stability and help foster economic development in Tunisia. In January 2015, the Tunisian President, Mr. Beji Caid Essebsi made her Grand Officer of the Order of the Republic, and His Majesty, King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, decorated her with the Royal Order of the Polar Star in November 2015. She also received in December 2015, the “Legion d’Honneur” from the French President, Mr. François Hollande. At the Annual Women Economic Forum (WEF) 2018 in India, she will felicitated with the highest WEF Award of “Legendary Peace Leaders of the Decade.”
