Diarietou Gaye, a Senegalese national, joined the Bank in January 1996 as a Country Economist, after serving in the Ministry of Economy and Finance in Senegal. She has since held various positions, including as Country Manager for Benin and Togo. In the period between 2007 and 2010, Gaye was on external service with the African Development Bank as Regional Director for East African countries. Her most recent assignment has been as Country Director for Sri Lanka and the Maldives (SAR).
Gaye brings to her new position a series of accomplishments as an economist, manager, and leader. She has had extensive operational experience in different institutions working on development and policy change in difficult contexts. As country director, Gaye’s top three priorities will be to provide overall strategic leadership for the Bank’s engagement in Kenya, Rwanda, Eritrea, and Uganda, supporting country priorities toward accelerating poverty reduction, effectively manage the Kenya office staff and budget, ensuring close integration of local and international staff and contribute to regional and corporate priorities and strategies.
