Dr S R Leela, a former Member of the Legislative Council, Government of Karnataka is an accomplished Sanskrit Scholar, a great orator, a passionate film producer, a sought-after columnist, a renowned author, a revered teacher, an able translator and many more things all rolled into one human dynamo. She is a vivacious person of varied interests: Cooking, Gardening, reading, listening to classical music, scripting, writing, acting, direction, social service are some of them which she has been pursuing with passion.
Born into a culturally rich but an economically poor family in a remote village in Karnataka, Sampangere R Leela is one of the most respected 'Thought Leaders' today with a fan following from across the globe. After completing her Masters in Sanskrit, she got her doctorate from Bangalore University and served as a Prof and HOD of Sanskrit Department in a prestigious College in Bangalore. A later on became the Director of RV Institute of Sanskrit Studies.
After taking voluntary retirement from college in 2005, she joined Mahabharata Pratishtana, as Editorial-coordinator of the Encyclopedia of the Mahabharata, at the request of the Institute. She edited many books in Kannada, English and Hindi, during her short stay there for two years, till she was nominated to the upper house of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. She was awarded the prestigious Aryabhatta Award in 2008.
As a MLC, Dr S R Leela took rural development projects seriously working towards the benefit of villages, by laying roads, installing Solar lamps, recovering government properties, rejuvenating lakes and many other social activities that has earned the love and respect of all the villagers of Kolar and surrounding areas.
She has been invited to deliver talks on Indian literature, Philosophy and tradition. She has toured the world extensively and presented papers in the many Conferences. She founded the cultural organisation called Abhinaya Bharati, for propagation of classical arts epitomized in Sanskrit Theatre and has staged plenty of Sanskrit dramas. She has produced 4 films authored 15 books in three languages, Sanskrit, English and Kannada, directed and staged many dramas and is an advisory in the close to 20 premier organisations like Sri Ramakrishna Mutt, Rasthriya Samskrit Samskrthan, The Mythic Society etc.,
The story of her rise in stature is underlined by her mother's support in her pursuits during her childhood days followed by grit, Will, a phenomenal commitment to the right value system and the conviction to give her best in everything she did. Today she stands tall amongst the most respected and elite intellectuals in the country.
